name & location
The neighborhood is known as East Bde Maka Ska because it is located on the eastern shore of Bde Maka Ska, a Dakota name meaning White Earth Lake or White Bank Lake. It was previously known as ECCO and East Calhoun Community Organization, which was updated alongside the lake’s renaming, after a lengthy engagement process. For a short history (and pronunciation) lesson on the current name, take a look at this video:
Bde Maka Ska is part of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes Regional Park, one of the most popular recreational destinations in the Twin Cities. The neighborhood is bound by Lake Street on the north, 36th Ave on the south, Hennepin Ave on the east and Bde Maka Ska Pkwy on the west.
